Page Three. The day was nasty. It was raining heavily in the morning and at noon. It was rather cold too five degrees above zero. There was a lot of water in the streets and roads. I hate such days and such weather. Autumn is not my favourite season at all .

18 My Favourite Pastime If you ask me what my favourite pastime is, Ill answer that I have more than one. First Im fond of cooking and my family say that my cakes and pies are really tasty and I always prepare birthday cakes for my parents, brothers and my little sister Mary. Then I love to make clothes. My friends tell me that my clothes are always fashionable and nice. Some of them think that I buy them in Harrods which is not true. I never buy trousers, shirts or skirts in shops for rich people .

I make all my dresses myself. Mary also likes things that I make for her. They are bright and never boring .

But most of all I like travelling. When you go abroad or just travel about England, you discover so many unusual things, learn so many interesting facts and meet different people. This summer Im going to visit Russia. My pen friend Lena invites me to come to stay with her family in the city of Vladimir. Isnt it wonderful?

19 Shopping in London Ann: May I ask you something, Linda?

Linda: Certainly. What is it?

Ann: I want to buy some clothes some trainers, jeans and a warm sweater. Where can I buy fashionable clothes in London?

Linda: When I want to buy some clothes, I go to Oxford Street. It may be the busiest street in the city with lots and lots of different shops, big and small .

Ann: I hear that the best place to do shopping in London is Harrods. Is it true?

Linda: Harrods is very famous and popular with visitors of London. Its really big and has everything you could ever want to buy. They have very good souvenirs too. Harrods is a wonderful place to look around but to buy things in Harrods is not easy if you dont have a lot of money .

Ann: I see. I think Ill go there some day and walk about the place .

L i n d a: Good idea. Only dont wear shorts when you go to Harrods. They ask everybody who doesnt look tidy to leave the shop .

Ann: How unusual! So no scruffy jeans, no shorts, no old trainers when I go there. Can you tell me how to get to Oxford Street?

20 Robins Hobby My name is Robin. Im 13 and I live in London, Great Britain. I have lots of good friends with whom I play football, watch videos and go roller-skating. But my favourite pastime is to go to the zoo and to the London Aquarium. Im really interested in animals and want to be a biologist some day, an oceanographer .

The London Aquarium helps me to learn more about ocean fish and sea animals. It is one of the biggest in Europe. Here I can see how different fishes feed, how jellyfish swim and crabs move about. In the Aquarium there are a lot of people working there, who can give you useful information. I ask them questions and they always answer them .

From time to time I go to Regents Park to visit the Zoo. The park is very old: King Henry VIII went hunting there in the 16th century. Now people who come to the park can go to a rose garden, visit an openair theatre in the summer and go boating on the Regents Canal. There are also places for playing tennis and golf. But when I come to the park, I go to the Zoo .

I know a lot of animals in it and sometimes I think that they know me too. I read that the Zoo houses more than 5,000 animals. They have everything from giraffes to alligators .

UNIT 6 21 1)Colin is a schoolboy of fourteen. He goes to school every day but Sundays. When he goes to school, he wears a white shirt, a black jacket and dark grey trousers. Sometimes he puts on a tie. He mustnt wear jeans or T-shirts at school but he likes to wear them at weekends .

2)Wendy is nineteen. She is a very nice-looking girl .

She is going to a birthday party tomorrow. She will put on her new fashionable skirt and a white blouse. Then Wendy will put on a white jacket and her new sandals, which she bought yesterday .

3) Fiona is a very active girl. She likes sport very much. She plays football every Saturday. All her friends are boys. Fiona looks like a boy. She never wears skirts or dresses. She wears shorts or jeans with a T-shirt. She plays football even when it is cold. Then she puts on leggings, her warm sweater and gloves .

22 My Daddy Hi, Im Nick .

My daddy is a teacher. He works at school. He likes his job. When he goes to work, he always puts on a suit, a white shirt, and a tie. He has a lot of suits, they are different in colour .

My daddy has holidays four times a year: in autumn, summer, winter and spring. He likes his summer holidays very much as he can travel then. He usually goes to the South. He takes shorts and a lot of T-shirts, sandals and his swimming suit. In autumn he doesnt travel far as his holidays are short then. He usually goes to the country. He walks in the forest or goes fishing in the river. So he puts on his raincoat and boots as it often rains in autumn. He may also put on his other warm clothes: his sweater or a sweatshirt. He always takes his gloves with him .

In winter he has two weeks for his holidays. He usually goes to the park to ski with his friends. So he puts on his warm sports trousers, a winter jacket, and a warm scarf. He doesnt wear gloves in winter, he always puts on his mittens. So this is how my daddy spends his holidays .

23 Dear Alan, Thank you for your letter. Im leaving for the country next week when my classes finish and I am able to go. Can you meet me at the railway station? Last time we met a year ago. Now I look different. You will not believe your eyes when you see me. Im a different girl now. My body is slim and I have shapely legs. I can wear what I want. Now I like fashionable clothes. I like to wear short skirts or leggings with a colourful T-shirt. My hair is different, too. It is long and curly .

I hope you will like my new looks now .

Your cousin, Jackie 24 Our Friends Mary: I dont know why you spend so much time with Alice. I dont like her .

Kate: But I do. She is very honest and reliable and a good friend too .

Mary: Yes, but she is so boring. She has no hobbies, she thinks only about school and lessons and homework, a real swart .

K a t e: She is just hard-working. Whats wrong about it?

Mary: Nothing wrong, but she is no fun to be with, no fun as a friend .

Kate: I know what girls you like. Your new friend is Sue. I think she is really lazy .

M a r y: Sue may be lazy but she is never selfish .

I think she is able to change and start working harder:

she is not at all stupid .

K a t e: You may be right. She is not bad. I like it that she is modest. You know what, Ill invite her to my birthday party next week. Maybe when I know her better, well make friends .

Mary: Its a wonderful idea. Oh, I love you, Kate .

Youll be my best friend ever .

Kate: Thank you. I love you too .
