DEINOTHERIUM (MAMMALIA, PROBOSCIDEA) IN THE LATE



TERTIARY BIOMES OF EASTERN EUROPE

Academician RAS G.G. Matishov, N.P. Kalmykov Analysis of data on the representatives of the Deinotherium genus indicates their broad range and distribution in the South of Eastern Europe in the Late Tertiary period. Their inhabiting the area indicates the exaggeration of sizes of the Eastern Paratethys, including transgressions of the Sarmatian, Moeotis, and Pontos Seas, and its role as a water barrier for the spreading of terrestrial mammals. Their living together with other kinds of Hipparion fauna conrms the conclusion on the reliefs leveling and slow change of climate and landscapes accompanied by gradual extinction of many taxa of mammals in the Neogene .
